This is the first year at the new farm, that is the first in three, that I’ve successfully seeded cover crop after harvesting the last succession from any given field. It feels like such a win - time and energy available to enrich the dirt now that we’re not in the middle of building infrastructure. Except for the farm stand ... but that’s @arlyce_rosko’s job 💪🏼. Good morningggg Montana! I like to think that the debris that’s left in the field after salad harvest is a solid green manure - loads of organic matter turned into the soil to make it better and better for the humus and bacteria and fungus we want to cultivate. It justifies our cut and done policy, which also gives us the most consistent and highest quality salad we can muster. I’ll take it.

There’s only one more week of salad seeding for the 2019 season! That means our Wednesdays are a little more free for other projects: we’re not prepping beds this week, or moving tarps (ok there’s still some tarp moving but not for salad successions). Instead we start to clean up the farm, knock off those random projects that have been on the list for months, sink into fall. One of the major changes we made this year came directly from @arlyce_rosko and @dasia_simone_ checking my systems: rather than hooping all of our seeded arugula (a time intensive and annoying task that I’ve been doing for 9 years), one week we... didn’t. And it was good - great even - much to my surprise. Turning over this succession of arugula (in the background, this right here is buckwheat cover) I felt so grateful for and proud of this team. A little change like that means better germination, even water distribution, and a huge time savings. Thanks for testing this Virgo - you da best 🌈🌈🌈🌈
